After we drove to downtown Spokane, laughing and relaxed on this snowy Monday morning, we found ourselves at Hatch. Hatch is a coffee shop in the Saranac Commons on Spokane’s Main Street. The Commons is a fresh place that holds a few different cafés, businesses and this hip place. Because it is tucked away in this foodie paradise, it feels like a secret, special find—it’s the kind of place you have to really know Spokane to find, barely listed online.
We hope to enlighten you on all these local places, so we decided to cover this unique escape. It is special because it is homey, industrial, hip and has excellent coffee.
We decided to order a 16 oz almond milk latte half-calf and a 16 oz almond milk latte w/ half-caramel which rounded out to be 5.51 and 5.97 respectively. The prices for the coffee and pretty much everything on the hanging menu was average. The coffee however does have a unique finish, bold and creamy. It was sweet and full, almost fragrant. They source from a roastery called Cat and Cloud located in Santa Cruz (which we have ordered bagged coffee from before). Finally, the caramel added the perfect finish to the nuttiness of almond. They often also have a few pastries, but the day we went they were scarce.
We sat down and settled in to do what we love to do on these lazy, cold winter days: productively procrastinate by exploring the internet and our passions. We chatted and sipped, thinking about how this is a great place to study; we saw a few others tucked away working as well. There are power cords lining the walls of the space but none in the middle, and there was good Wi-Fi. Nevertheless, some of the high top tables and bar chairs are metal and do not have backs so they can get a bit uncomfy. Also, it is not super well insulated and gets cold, so don’t forget a jacket!
In the end, if you want an honest, quality cup of coffee, we recommend you make your way to this special place too (and let us know what you think).
